Prof.New Delhi: The Jamia Hamdard University has become the first plastic-free university in the national capital and the entire NCR.“Henceforth, single-use plastic like bottle, cups, glasses and other items, polythene bags, and plastic items less than 50 microns have been banned.The vice-chancellor, Prof. Ahmad said that the usage of plastic is detrimental to the environment and human body and keeping this in view the university has taken the important decision to ban plastic in the university.

The South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) said in a statement that during a ‘swachhta pakhwara’ event at the Jamia Hamdard University it was declared that the entire campus, including all canteens, shops, coffee houses, and hostels, were plastic-free from Tuesday itself.During the ‘swachhta pakhwara’ valedictory function, 9,000 students took a pledge to not use plastic items in the university and use bags made of jute and clothes instead of plastic.

The chairman of the canteen and shops committee, Professor Sayad Mehtab Ali, has issued notice to this effect which states that violators will be slapped a fine of Rs 500 on every violation. end-of Tags: plastic free zones, sdmc. The Maharashtra government wants to make the plastic ban in the state more stringent by cancelling shop licences if such material is found there, state Environment Minister Ramdas Kadam said Tuesday. He said that a primary level meeting had already been held to decide on how to go about implementing this new proposal. He said that visible littering of plastic bags had come down since the ban, adding that 290 tonnes of banned plastic had been seized and fines of `2.
